Before coming to health, I was a Maaori performing arts
teacher. I didn’t have any medical training. My sister-in-law
worked in recruitment and she told me about the health promoter
job. I went over the job description several times. I realised
this job was not only something that I’d like to do, but also
something I could do. Here I am today, working towards a
healthier Aotearoa.
My job is to help schools identify their health needs and work
towards making them better. We work to improve the health and
well being of the whole school community. To make these positive
changes, I work with school staff and members of the school
community.
I get on the job training so I’m never thrown into the deep end.
Training covers everything from building relationships with
communities to facilitating with confidence.
Although our team covers Otara to East Auckland and down to Port
Waikato, we’re all based in the same office. Our team also has a
good mix of cultures, backgrounds and ages. This means we can
share ideas, learn from each others experiences and relate to
the diverse communities we work with.
Do you also have a passion for the health and well being of our
community? If so, consider a job in Health Promotion.
