I used to be a procurement officer in a pharmaceutical company
in Fiji. When I moved to New Zealand I worked in a retail
pharmacy as a pharmacy assistant. I’m a pharmacy technician
today because a pharmacist I worked with was kind enough to put
the idea to me.
I did my training while I was a trainee technician at Middlemore
Hospital. The training is very practical. You learn on the job.
As part of it, a pharmacist from my team mentored me. Because of
this I was able to work, study and look after my young kids.
Middlemore Hospital is definitely an exciting and interesting
place to work. As a team, we work to get the right type of
medication to the right patient at the right time. To do this,
we need to be accurate, organised and manage our time well.
Some of the things I do include looking after our drug supply
and preparing medicines for the wards. Because the job is so
practical, good concentration skills and attention to detail are
valuable to have.
Knowing that I play a part in saving lives and keeping people
well is the best part of my job. I also love the variety of
people and situations that come with each day. I’d like to put
the idea of being a pharmacy technician to you. If it’s the
right job for you then make the move. It’s never too late!
