Ian - Anaesthetic Technician at Middlemore Hospital

The good thing about working in health is that there are so many different jobs you can do. I was a health care assistant.  I wanted a job that would fulfill my interest in medical knowledge.  So I decided to move in a different direction in health to find what I was looking for. I started from scratch again just so I could be an Anaesthetic Technician.

When I was training, I wasn’t always learning in a classroom. I also had full time hospital employment where I was learning by being in an operating theatre. I would help to prepare the anaesthetic machine and anaesthetic equipment. I also learnt how to assist the Anaesthetist to monitor the patient before, during and after an operation.

As an Anaesthetic Technician, I get to view some interesting medical cases.  To do this job, you can’t get faint at the sight of blood. You’ve got to like working with hi-tech equipment and have an eye for detail. Learning on the job is also a continuous process.

Being an Anaesthetic Technician can be demanding at times but it is truly a great job. If you decide to become an Anaesthetic Technician like I did, then go for it with all you’ve got!
