Before I became a Midwife, I was a swimming teacher at a
swimming school. When I started my Midwifery training, I was
raising two teenagers on my own. Twenty years had also passed
since I was a student in high school. I had to learn to be
disciplined so I could study without letting it take over my
life. It was important that I maintained a well-balanced life so
that my children and other responsibilities did not suffer. This
was a challenging balance to maintain, but I did it. I think
others in similar situations can do it too.
As a student, I did quite a few hospital placements at
Middlemore. The experience was great. After I qualified, I
applied for the new graduate
programme.
Because I work in the hospital on rostered shifts, I know
exactly when I’m working and when I’m not. I don’t have to work
Monday to Friday as well. This suits my current lifestyle.
As a Midwife, I get to support women and families during a
special time in their lives. Would you like to support and
educate women and families during pregnancy, birth and newborn
stage? If so, make Midwifery your career choice.
