Surgical Services - Operating Theatres
Counties Manukau District Health Board
(CMDHB) serving the people of South and East Auckland is one of the
largest providers of paediatric and adult primary, secondary and
tertiary health care in Australasia.
The operating theatres are located on two
sites at Middlemore and Manukau. The staff are a committed team who
focus on quality care to ensure positive patient outcomes. Career
Pathways are well established and structured to enable ongoing
professional development.
Middlemore
Operating Theatres
Middlemore Hospital was built on land
purchased from the adjacent golf course during the Second World War for
the predicted casualties from the Pacific. As it transpired the hospital
was not required and on 3rd May 1947 the hospital was
officially opened for the local population. Little of those original
buildings remain.
In 1964 a new surgical block was built
which had 6 operating rooms. The theatres have been updated with 5
theatres being added to give 11 theatres.
Middlemore has undergone a number of
rebuilding upgrades and today is a modern hospital with many new patient
focussed innovations. Planning is now underway for the replacement of
the existing 11 operating theatres.
Middlemore provides acute and trauma
surgery and some elective surgery covering a range of specialties
including Orthopaedics and Orthopaedic Oncology, General and Vascular
surgery, Gynaecology, Plastic and Reconstructive surgery, Regional Hand
Unit, acute and elective Obstetrics and is home to the recently opened
National Burns unit.
Theatre remains a challenging and
exciting speciality and the expansion of services provides a stimulating
and rewarding professional journey.
Manukau Surgery Centre
Manukau Surgery Centre (MSC), located a
short distance from Middlemore, opened in 1997. The original theatres
were located adjacent to the Manukau SuperClinic™
and consisted of 4 day-stay theatres and 2 procedure rooms. Originally
the theatres offered only day surgery.
In 2001, the facilities
expanded with the construction of in-patient wards and the expansion of
the operating theatres. This expansion has increased the theatres
numbers to 10 theatres and 2 procedure rooms. This enables CMDHB to
provide more complex in-patient elective surgery and supported CMDHB
philosophy to “ring fence” elective surgery preventing impact on the
elective patient planning. MSC specialties including Orthopaedics and
Orthopaedic Oncology, General and Vascular surgery, Gynaecology, Plastic
and Reconstructive surgery, Regional Hand Unit, ORL and Ophthalmology.
