Surgical Services - Breast Clinic
Middlemore Breast Clinic provides a tertiary breast service, seeing approximately 2500 patients per year at a purpose built clinic at the Manukau SuperClinic™. There are two consultant led multi-disciplinary clinics per week, which assess a full range of patients with breast disease.
The medical team includes three surgeons, five pathologists, four radiologists and three oncologists, as well as doctors in training. There are close links with the Middlemore Plastic and Reconstructive surgeons.
Clinical examination, FNAC, core biopsy, ultrasound, mammography, specimen localisation, image guided biopsy and MRI scanning are utilised to diagnose tumours and plan surgery. Pathologists, surgeons and radiologists are on site to provide a same day diagnosis for lumps in over 90% of cases.
There is also a dedicated breast radiography team and mammography is performed throughout the week for both screening and symptomatic patients.
The nursing team is led by a breast care nurse with special training and skills in this area. There is a weekly multi-disciplinary meeting to discuss all cases of note. All patients for breast cancer surgery are discussed before and after surgery with particular emphasis on choice of surgery and the need for adjuvant therapy.
