Mental Health Services for Older People

The Mental Health Services for Older People offers a fully integrated inpatient and community service with expertise offered in the assessment and treatment of the full range of mental health disorders that occur in older people.

We see:

  • People 65 years of age and older with:
    • Functional Disorders
    • Dementia with behavioural disorders.
    • People under 65 years of age if they have an age related disorder, e.g. early onset dementia.

The initial assessment is conducted in the patients own home and the decision is made to continue with treatment at home or admission if necessary.

We have an acute admitting ward with 15 inpatient beds. The community team covers the greater South Auckland area and provides treatment to people in their own homes, in Rest Homes and in Private Hospitals.

We are fully multidisciplinary and team focussed. The team consists of psychogeriatricians, nurses (inpatient and psychiatric district nurses), clinical psychologists, social worker, Occupational Therapist, administration support.
