Nurse Entry To Practice (NETP) Programme

 
 

The Nurse Entry to Practice programme at Counties Manukau District Health Board (CMDHB) is a comprehensive twelve-month programme*.

The aim of the Nurse Entry to Practice programme is to provide a supportive environment in which graduate nurse progress from novice to competent registered nurse, to enable him/her to provide a high standard of nursing care, and to promote continuing professional development.

 

* Graduate nurse employment with CMDHB is based on a fixed term contract for twelve months

Support

Our main objective here at CMDHB is to make graduate nurses feel 100% supported during the programme.  The NETP team includes a Nurse Co-ordinator, Nurse Educator and Clinical Coaches here to support the new graduates in the organisation.  Support is also provided by clinical based Preceptors and Nurse Educators for the services.  Preceptors are allocated to new graduates in each clinical area and are available as ongoing support along with other team members for the remainder of the clinical placements.

 


Professional Development


The NETP programme consists of 3 components that support your professional development.

Academic Component

  • 12 study days over the year, includes post graduate education and in-service
  • One 30 point paper in partnership with the University of Auckland (Adult stream)
  • One 20 point paper in partnership with Auckland University of Technology (AUT) (Paediatric stream)

Clinical Component

  • Wide variety of clinical placements
  • Either 2 x 6 monthly rotations or 1 x 12 month placement
  • Read the information below regarding the variety of placements available
  • Discuss the options with the NETP team to assist in finding the areas that suit your passion

PDRP Component

  • Support to complete your Professional Development & Recognition Programme (PDRP) portfolio
  • Submit a competent level portfolio prior to completion of the NETP programme


Upon successful completion of the NETP programme the New Graduate Nurse will receive a Counties Manukau DHB NETP Certificate

Medical/Surgical Services

Medical Services provide expert multi-disciplinary in-patient care for the citizens of the South Auckland region in a multitude of sub specialities.

Services include:

  • Cardiology
  • Respiratory
  • Endocrinology
  • Haematology
  • Stroke
  • Gastroenterology

The Surgical Services deliver secondary elective and acute services to the population of Counties Manukau region.  The Surgical Services acute, trauma and some elective surgery is provided at the Middlemore Hospital campus, while an increasing volume of elective surgery has moved over to the Manukau Surgery Centre.

Kidz First - Paediatrics

Kidz First Children’s Hospital and Community Health provides an integrated child and family focused services.  This includes a comprehensive range of services for children and their families and whaanau in the South Auckland region.

Services include:

  • Kidz First Medical
  • Kidz First Surgical
  • Kidz First Emergency Care
  • Neonatal Unit
  • Public Health

Nurse Entry To Practice – Expansion Programme


The establishment of the NETP – Expansion Programme within CMDHB enables the New Graduate Nurse to follow in their goals and aspirations for Primary Health Care Nursing without first having to gain experience in a tertiary centre. The programme has extended to the Primary Care arena having established good relationships between the DHB and a variety of primary providers.   

  • Primary Health Organisation’s (General Practices) (PHO)
  • Non-Government Organisation’s (NGO)
  • Residential Care Facilities (RCF)

Mental Health Graduate Programme


The Mental Health Graduate Programme is a specially designed programme to challenge and develop the New Graduate Nurse in the specialty of Mental Health. It is an exciting programme with the support from a strong team within Mental Health services.

There is a strong focus on the academic component to develop competency, with 17 study days through out the year to provide the programme.  The New Graduate will work towards a Post Graduate Certicate which is completed with 2 x 30 papers through the University of Auckland.

The New Graduate will be provided with clinical supervision as well as having a preceptor within their clinical placement, and access to the Mental Health Nurse Educator.

Clinical placements are aimed to provide a 6 month placement in both a community and inpatient setting. CMDHB provides and funds a range of mental health services for people who experience mental illness these include:

  • Three referees, please include clinical tutor and a clinical preceptor/charge nurse
  • Three preferences for clinical placements
