Community Midwifery Services

Community Midwives
This is a Midwifery led service, providing primary maternity care from either Middlemore Hospital or one of the three Community Maternity Units. The Community Midwives endeavour to provide continuity of care antenatally and postnatally in the community (either at clinics or at home). The options available to women are for total midwifery or shared care with their GPs.

The service operates seven day a week, hours are 8:00 to 4.30 pm.

We pride ourselves on being flexible and valuing midwives returning to midwifery after maternity leave or with children. Our midwives come from a wide variety of midwifery backgrounds and ages. This results in an ever- changing and vibrant work environment. Teamwork is alive and well within the group.

Caseloading ( Team ) Midwives
The caseloading team of Midwives provide total care throughout pregnancy until 6 weeks post delivery. The team offers their services to women residing in the surrounding area of Middlemore Hospital, providing hospital, community maternity unit and home births. Although this is predominantly primary maternity care, the midwives continue care under the umbrella of the hospital Obstetricians in cases where women become secondary care. The salary package and entitlements for caseloading midwives is very attractive.

High Risk and Diabetes Midwives
These midwives work alongside secondary care services where Obstetric, Physician and/or dietician care is required. The midwives provide antenatal and postnatal continuity of care  with a focus on education and monitoring while providing a positive aspect to the woman and her family of a high-risk pregnancy.

Teen Pregnancy Midwives
These midwives work with young expectant mothers under 18 years of age.  Support is provided in conjunction with Maaori trust to provide a wrap around service and social support. The midwives undertake the antenatal and postnatal continuity of care similar to that of the community midwifery service.
